Russia - Exchange of NFT-tokens based on VKontakte: hype or reality

Russia (bbabo.net), - The VKontakte social network will implement NFT support: through the social network, authors will be able to upload content, create a token, and then place it on the stock exchange. Experts are skeptical about the prospects of such a project.

According to the company, support for NFT tokens will become part of a set of tools for monetizing user content and copyright protection. At the same time, according to the technical director of the social network Alexander Tobol, they are not going to create their own blockchain in VKontakte, the social network intends to act as an intermediary and assistant.

“There is a technology formation process, and it has been completed. Platforms have already appeared, blockchain has appeared. And there is not enough product history to collect all this and bring it to users. NFT token, then place it on the stock exchange," Tobol said on the air of Vesti.Net.

According to experts, the global market for NFT tokens is now between 20 and 35 billion dollars a year. It is expected that over the next three years it will grow to $80 billion.

One of the main problems of the NFT market is called fraud. According to OpenSea - one of the world's largest NFT platforms - more than 80 percent of the NFT tokens they create are plagiarism or fakes. VKontakte has a solution to this problem too - the social network proposes to use the existing Content ID system - verification of the authorship of all downloaded music and videos. Moreover, both within the social network and in the content databases of the world's largest labels.

"If you supplement all this with Content ID as a guarantee that this content is unique on this site or around the world, then this fixes copyright. If this whole story is, on the one hand, with a guarantee of uniqueness, on the other hand, with copyright on the territory of various countries - will be united around the blockchain and NFT, then this is a truly universal super-cool solution for authors," Tobol said.

Experts are cautious about the prospects for NFT and the exchange of tokens created on the basis of the social network. In their opinion, the main problems in the implementation of the project will be related to the lack of the necessary expertise from the social network and the lack of regulatory measures for the NFT market from the state.

In Russia, there are no specialized platforms where non-fungible tokens are created and sold, Vladislav Antonov, a financial analyst at BitRiver, notes.

"Usually, there are specialized platforms for this, where NFT products are created and placed, it is on them that large customer bases are created and developed in a specialized environment. VKontakte has a too diverse audience that does not understand and does not know the real price of products. Monetization scheme may be very unfinished, but for the growth of the audience of a social network in the topic of digital financial assets, this is a very good story," the expert believes.

The lack of legal regulation for the NFT token market is considered by Elina Sidorenko, Director of the Center for Digital Economy of MGIMO of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of a colleague for digital disputes of the RSPP Arbitration Center, as the main problem.

"According to experts, NFT is the best way to digitally fix copyright and related rights. However, today we have to fix that the copyright object itself and the NFT token directly attached to it are still different objects that can exist separately from each other. from each other, and legal regulation in this part can hardly be considered unambiguous," Sidorenko believes.

Sidorenko considers the idea of an NFT token exchange to be the most dubious part of VKontakte's initiatives. In her opinion, there is much more hype in this story than real work.

“Everyone should do what they can. We already have sad examples of the use of digital financial assets by social networks, just remember the Facebook cryptocurrency,” Sidorenko notes.

According to the expert, any form of transfer of copyright or any other property rights, invested in NFT tokens, will initially not be of a legal nature, and the transaction itself will be recognized as void. Social networks today are neither mentally nor reputationally adapted to enter the shaky ground of digital assets.
