Russian biathletes win silver in Olympic relay

The Russian women's biathlon team took second place in the relay at the Beijing Olympics. The team included Irina Kazakevich, Kristina Reztsova, Svetlana Mironova and Uliana Nigmatullina.

The victory was won by Sweden's Lynn Persson, Mona Brorsson, Hanna Oeberg and Elvira Oeberg with a time of 1 hour 11 minutes 3.9 seconds and six spare rounds. The Russians gave them 12 seconds, having spent seven additional cartridges and once leaving for the penalty loop.

Third place was taken by the Germans Vanessa Voigt, Vanessa Hinz, Franziska Preuss and Denise Herrmann (+37.4; 6 extra cartridges).

The Swiss biathlete was carried away on a stretcher from the track in the 2022 Olympics relay. After the first stage, the Russians took seventh place, after the second (Kristina Reztsova ran on it) - the first. At the third stage, Mironova made four misses on the standing and went to the penalty loop, she passed the baton as a result of the third, 13.5 seconds behind the leaders.

Nigmatullina at her stage bypassed the Italian Federica Sanfilippo and did not let Denise Herrmann close to her.

The last time Russian biathletes won a medal in the relay at the Olympics in 2010, then the Russians won. In 2014, the Russian team had silver, but later the team lost it due to the fact that Olga Zaitseva was punished for violating anti-doping rules.

Nigmatullina and Reztsova won bronze in the mixed relay earlier in Beijing. Thus, only Evgenia Burtasova, who was not included in the relay race because of her refusal to run a training start, was left without the Olympic awards from the Russians.

The Russian team has four gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals in Beijing, the Russians are in ninth place in the medal standings. Norway is in the lead (12-7-8). In terms of the total number of medals (21), the Russians are second only to Norway (27).
