Russia - Gadgets for drug administration enter the market

Russia (bbabo.net), - The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the first mobile application for managing an insulin pump. In Russia, devices of this type have not yet been registered, but their appearance can be expected in the near future.

The US regulator-approved version automatically delivers bolus insulin (short-acting insulin that absorbs carbohydrates from meals). The feature is currently only available to US users.

Tandem Diabetes Care says bolus insulin delivery is the most common scenario for interaction with the pump. Automation of drug administration and the ability to control from a smartphone will make the procedure more comfortable.

In Russia, the use of such systems has not yet been registered, notes Mikhail Levin, head of the Competence Center for Digital Transformation of the Healthcare Sector of the Russian Ministry of Health. "Roszdravnadzor has a simplified registration procedure for them. I do not exclude that Russian manufacturers can use it in the near future," he added.

At the same time, insulin pumps themselves for providing medical care to patients with diabetes mellitus are produced in the country and, moreover, provided to citizens free of charge under the state guarantees program.

One of the key issues when using such gadgets is safety - from external influences and from errors. According to the position of Roszdravnadzor, the main requirement for applications of this type is that the data be transmitted unchanged.

As for external influences, as noted in Kaspersky Lab, to date, attacks on implantable devices, such as neurostimulators or pumps, have not been recorded. However, there are studies that show the presence of vulnerabilities in implantable devices or software for managing them, which may eventually begin to be exploited by attackers. Risks will increase as wearables and implantable devices become networked and opportunities for centralized attacks and infections through a single point of entry emerge.

"Attacks, for example, with the aim of substituting or controlling indicators, can be interesting only if the target of the attackers is a specific person. Such attacks are very difficult and expensive to organize, so such stories are very rare. More real cases are when the equipment stops working due to attacks ransomware," said Dmitry Galov, a cybersecurity expert at Kaspersky Lab.

More than 320 million health monitoring devices will be sold in 2022, with a 19% annual sales growth

To protect against threats, users should follow general cybersecurity rules, if applicable. We are talking, for example, about setting complex passwords for applications, two-factor authentication. In addition, you should not connect to public Wi-Fi for data transfer.

According to experts, the market for health monitoring devices will grow rapidly in the coming years. Thus, according to Deloitte, more than 320 million health monitoring devices will be sold in 2022, and the sales growth rate will be 19% per year.
