The Kremlin said that no one is persecuted in Russia due to political convictions

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that no one is persecuted in Russia on the basis of political convictions. The press secretary of the Russian head of state announced this at a briefing with reporters.

Peskov commented on the law signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the simplified acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship by persons allegedly "persecuted" in the Russian Federation.

“There is no one in the Russian Federation who is persecuted for political reasons. There is legislation, and under the current legislation, people are prosecuted for suspicion of committing certain crimes, ”said Peskov.

According to him, as such, there is no political persecution on the territory of Russia.

At the same time, the Kremlin stressed that the wording of the law of Ukraine concerning the granting of citizenship is "incorrect".

In early November, it became known that Ukraine supported the idea of granting citizenship to the allegedly persecuted Russians. Also, the Rada of the country supported the idea of simplifying citizenship for foreigners who participated in the military "anti-terrorist operation" in the Donbass on the part of Kiev and "participated in the protection of the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine."
