Kazakh priest Ivanov spoke about the battles near the temple in Alma-Ata

The head of the information department of the Astanaai and Alma-Ata diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and its press secretary, Archpriest Yevgeny Ivanov, told RIA Novosti about the street battles that unfolded near the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and near the Nativity of Christ Cathedral.

“In Alma-Ata, next to two temples, literally in the very vicinity, the most serious hostilities unfolded. The main police department of the city of Alma-Ata is located next to the Nikolsky Cathedral, and the terrorist fighters wanted to take it by storm. This assault took place actually 10 meters from the temple itself, but the temple was not damaged, fortunately, and none of the people suffered, ”Ivanov said.

According to him, a headquarters was set up near the Nativity of Christ Cathedral, where protesters built barricades and burned tires from cars around the clock. The priest noted that during the clashes, parishioners and clergy did not suffer.

Earlier it was reported that the Kazakhstani security forces would carry out "cleansing" of looters and participants in the riots in Almaty at night.

On January 2, mass protests began in Kazakhstan. This happened after the government decided to raise gas prices from 60 to 120 tenge. The protests quickly escalated into riots and clashes with the police.

On January 4, the government commission announced its decision to reduce the gas price to 50 tenge. On the night of January 5, Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev announced the introduction of 180-day state regulation of prices for fuel and food in the country.
