Don't give up on heroes

Russia (bbabo.net), - Even though you want to hug, protect, support figure skater Kamila Valieva, who at this Olympics was first an object of admiration, and then - harassment, despite the fact that you want (or wanted before her reaction) to stand applauding the success of the stubborn maximalist Alexandra Trusova, who nevertheless performed five quadruple jumps, I don’t want to leave in the shadow the victory of Anna Shcherbakova, who at the right time and in the right place gave her maximum and became the Olympic champion.

And if in the case of Valieva the athlete herself is a hostage of a monstrous situation, then the behavior of Sasha Trusova immediately after the announcement of the results cannot be attributed only to a moment of despair and a nervous breakdown, which you will later regret and which - it just so happened - TV people and the press disassembled into quotes. The very next day after the tournament, Trusova not only took off and hid the silver medal immediately after the award. She snapped at reporters: "Anya will show you hers." But after all, this phrase, whoever said it, should be said with a completely different intonation. Shcherbakova was even asked why she behaves so reservedly - maybe she is embarrassed to celebrate the victory? Anya delicately insists that she simply left all her strength and emotions on the ice. For her, it was also the heaviest medal, and everything that happened still needs to be put in her head. Let's, no matter what, and we will try to appreciate this "gold".

Back to news | The departure of a loved one was not sudden. But you can't prepare for this. By an effort of will or just waiting for awareness to cover, you can detach, suppress feelings in order to do what is supposed to. In the case of Kazakevich - to speak at the main start - for himself and for the team. Ira stopped running at the first stage of the relay, and she ran - in her own strength. As a result, our girls won the "silver". And even after the finish, when it was possible to give vent to emotions, she did not cry, did not show grief in any way. She talked about sports, about how she tried not to overwhelm the shooting, how glad she was for the long-awaited medal.

The biathlete's mother told journalists about the tragedy in the family. The relay also coincided with the day of the funeral. Only after that Kazakevich herself shared her experiences a little. But then again, I didn't make a show out of it. In our time, when, by looking at social networks, you can find out the whole ins and outs of a person, when the border between personal and public has practically disappeared, there are people who prefer not to put their lives on public display. In Beijing, only a few people knew about what was happening with Ira: coach Mikhail Shashilov, teammates Svetlana Mironova and Kristina Reztsova, who supported and did not let them be alone with depressing thoughts. They say happiness loves silence. When it hurts and is bad, not everyone is ready to shout about it either.

Back to news | At the end of November 2021, she suffered a serious leg injury here during a test competition - a ligament rupture and a bone fracture. Doctors insisted that it was necessary to be treated for a couple of months. Ivanova listened to the diagnosis and assessed the risks - if something went wrong, the athlete could remain disabled - she took full responsibility, gathered her will into a fist and recovered in one month. Already at the end of December, she made a splash, appearing at the start with a splint on her leg and on crutches, and then she swept along the ice chute for an Olympic license. At the Games, she still limped, but this did not stop her from winning such an important medal. "Fearless Ivanova", "Ivanova accomplished a real feat" - such were the headlines. And only after the completion of the competition in the relay Tatyana admitted that there was still fear, but she defeated both him and her rivals.

Lucky those who fly

The silver medal in the mixed team competition in ski jumping was, without exaggeration, a complete surprise and the biggest sporting sensation. On that day, due to our next disqualification for interfering with an opponent, we were left without medals in the short track. But at the Olympics, next to disappointment, there is always a place for a miracle. In Beijing, it happened in a mixed tournament among flying skiers. On the trampoline, something incomprehensible and incredible was happening. Why suddenly several leaders and favorites had their results annulled?! They were punished for the non-compliance of the sizes of overalls with accepted standards, which affects aerodynamics. What do the Russians need to do to stay in the prizes? Just ignore the protocols and jump as best as you can or even better. In the final attempt, Evgeny Klimov flew 103 meters! And our team - Irma Makhinya, Danil Sadreev, Irina Avvakumova and Klimov - is second after the Slovenes. A lucky coincidence - yes, a well-deserved result - also yes. Lucky for those who are lucky.

Not only safe

Of course, at first the fences around all the Olympic venues and media hotels were straining. In the summer in Tokyo, we felt much freer. After 14 conditionally quarantine days, they could walk around the city. But the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Olympics proved that in the current situation with the spread of covid, the creation of a "bubble" was necessary and fully justified. Yes, some fellow journalists and athletested positive immediately upon arrival, despite the absence of symptoms of the disease, had to spend the first days at the Games in isolation. But inside the Olympic "perimeter" cases of infection were avoided. Masks, sanitizers, daily PCR tests - all this ultimately gave a sense of security. The work of the attendants, who vigilantly monitored cleanliness and constantly wiped all contact surfaces - from the desktop in the press center to the handrails on the escalators and elevator buttons - was simply amazing.

And speaking of quarantine. Volunteers and all staff were in isolation for two weeks before the start of the Games and will be in isolation for three more after we leave Beijing. Also heroes of the invisible front, although they wore bright orange and blue-white uniforms. And, importantly, there was no principle of blindly following the restrictions. The employees of the press center on some intuitive level understood: well, you can’t refuse Russian journalists the opportunity to talk with Bolshunov or with the skaters after the free program. The quota for the mixed zone, where social distancing had to be observed, was increased in exceptional circumstances so that everyone could do their job. Thanks, we made ours.
