Only 5% of women scientists defend doctoral dissertations

Only 5% of women who start doing science in graduate school go on to defend dissertations and receive a Ph.D. This is reported by TASS with reference to the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Irina Donnik. She shared the data during the forum “Scientific Certification: Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow". Information on how many men from graduate school reach doctoral degrees is not given.

At the event, she said: “It is not customary to talk about this, but nevertheless, it turns out that we have more young female graduate students, young candidates of sciences - about the same number as men, but then there are talented young female scientists, unfortunately , practically do not go.

She also cited UNESCO data that in the world only 36% of men and women, as soon as they have a child, give up science.

According to Donnik, the staffing problem, especially with academic degrees, becomes more acute as the distance from Moscow and St. Petersburg increases. In some regions today, according to her, it is almost impossible to find people with doctoral degrees even for the positions of directors of institutes.

She associated the problem of the scientific environment in Siberia and the Far East with the “washout” of young personnel to the center. According to her, young people flock to Moscow.
