Russia - Can film adaptations of games be successful? Uncharted released

Russia (bbabo.net), - The film Uncharted by Ruben Fleischer, the long-awaited adaptation of the popular computer game, has been released in Russian cinemas. 14 years of production hell. Seven directors who tried to bring the adventures of the tomb raider to the big screen. Tom Holland ("Spider-Man") and Mark Wahlberg ("The Departed", "Fighter") in the lead roles, which caused outrage among fans: the actors do not look like game characters either in appearance or type. The general concept, which in different years was reduced either to the film adaptation of the first part, or to the prequel of the entire series. An "honorary" title for a video game adaptation that does not bode well: by all accounts, such works come out extremely mediocre, and only dedicated fans can see any value in them. It would seem that there are too many factors indicating that Ruben Fleischer's tape will turn out to be a rather depressing sight. And ... expectations were not justified. Even more - it turned out to be quite a good movie.

Uncharted is an action-adventure series following the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake, descendant of the legendary pirate Francis Drake. Although obvious associations with Indiana Jones pop up in my head, the creation of the Naughty Dog studio is a completely independent work, with its own style and other attributes.

It seems to us that director Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Welcome to Zombieland) and his team made two of the most correct decisions when creating the picture.

First, don't try to just transfer the video game to the screen, since the original was already distinguished by cinematography, high quality production and a well-developed plot. Instead, the creators told a separate story, in the center of which is the formation of the future treasure hunter and his first serious adventure. Although the tape is replete with references to the video game series, including borrowing some scenes, it is quite suitable for those viewers who are not familiar with the original source.

The second decision is to convey not the form, but the essence of Uncharted, which is actually quite simple: the adventures of Nathan Drake make you feel like a real traveler who can do anything, and during the passage the player seems to return to the time of childhood, when everyone read Jules' adventure novels Verne or Alexandre Dumas, while simultaneously dreaming of finding El Dorado on their own someday. And the director managed to convey this feeling.

Yes, the adaptation can be criticized for many things: from the main antagonist performed by Antonio Banderas - the character's description fits in three words - "offended rich son", to situations where the characters in a couple of hours find the keys to riddles that others could not solve for several centuries. But all this fades into the background when real adventures come into play: exploring ancient temples, fighting on pirate ships or chasing artifacts. Many of the action scenes are well-acted. Maybe they will not cause a "wow effect", but at least they will simply "capture emotions" and give pleasure from viewing. At the same time, the tape is not only one big Odyssey to find a treasure, it also has a place for relationships between the characters, which are quite archetypal, but at the same time not without charm and charisma.

The main characters are Drake (Holland) and his partner Victor Sullivan (Wahlberg). The first is a young adventurer who dreams of finding his long-lost brother; the second is a professional thief and adventurer who thinks first of all about himself and money. At first, they are forced to cooperate with each other in order to find Magellan's gold, but gradually sympathy develops between them, which develops into friendship, which positively affects both. And by the end of the story, Nathan is no longer a simpleton who is easily deceived, and Sullivan is no longer a businessman who cares only about his own interests. It cannot be said that they become a family, but the definitions of "student" and "mentor" are quite suitable.

The film "Uncharted: Off the Maps" is not a breakthrough level of "Arcane", the adaptation of League of Legends, which last year became a revelation for many, including in terms of the fact that film adaptations of games can turn out to be of high quality and heartfelt even for those who is "off topic". The Fleischer tape is a fairly typical adventure film in which everything is done according to the patterns: hidden untold riches; tombs, where the key is certainly in the shape of a cross, and a resilient protagonist who even manages to joke during gunfights. However, the picture can be called worthy just because it gives a feeling of childish delight, namely, it is what you expect from this kind of stories.
