Russian archaeologists report on work in the underwater city of Arvad in Syria

Scientists from Sevastopol University, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with Syrian colleagues, are exploring the underwater city of Arvad. The work is carried out with the assistance of the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society. As Viktor Lebedinsky, head of the Syrian-Russian archaeological expedition from Russia, told REN TV, archaeologists have new surprises every day.

So, the ancient jug was taken from the seabed right in front of the journalists. It is reported that researchers are finding ceramics from ancient eras.

Lebedinsky specified that the result of the work will be a digital model of the defensive structures of Arvad. Scientists plan to combine the remains of structures on land and in the sea.

The fortress of Arvada has been known since the 2nd millennium BC. It was founded by the Phoenicians. Further, it was used by the Assyrians, Romans and even the knights of the Knights Templar.

Arvad is also called a small modern island, which is located opposite Tartus, the fortress was partially located on it.

It was also reported that Russian archaeologists began to restore the ancient temples of Syria.
