Netflix will shoot a series about Russian Liechtenstein accused of crypto theft

The streaming service Netflix ordered the filming of a documentary series about the laundering scheme for “billions of dollars in stolen cryptocurrency” invented by a US and Russian citizen Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife, the platform’s press service reports.

The project will be directed by Chris Smith, who previously worked on documentaries FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (2019) and Tiger King (2020) about big cat breeder Joe Exotic.

The US Department of Justice previously reported the seizure of more than $3.6 billion worth of bitcoins, which were stolen in 2016 as a result of a hacker attack from Bitfinex, one of Hong Kong's largest bitcoin exchanges.

Lichtenstein, 34, and Heather Morgan, 31, were charged in a criminal case of conspiring to launder the stolen 119,754 bitcoins. The value of the seized digital currency makes it the agency's largest financial seizure ever, officials said.
