Painting by Kandinsky, sold during the war, returned to the descendants of the owners

Bild mit häusern (Painting with Houses), a painting by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky sold during World War II, has been returned to the descendants of its rightful owners. This is reported by Het Parool.

The painting originally belonged to Jewish collector Robert Loewenstein, but he was forced to sell it while fleeing the Netherlands five months after the country was occupied by the Nazis. The magnate then sold it for 160 guilders, while at that time the cost of the work of art was estimated at 2000-3000 guilders. Starting in 2013, the descendants of Levenstein sued the administration of Amsterdam, trying to return the property, but initially the court did not support the claims of the plaintiffs.

“As a city, we have a huge responsibility to overcome the untold suffering and injustice inflicted on the Jewish population during World War II,” said Deputy Mayor Turia Meliani.

Earlier it was reported how much the Hermitage works were sold by the Bolsheviks.
