Russia - Energy consumption by the inhabitants of the Angara region has quadrupled due to mining

Russia (bbabo.net), - The Irkutsk region recorded a record increase in electricity consumption. In 2021, the population of the region used four times more electricity than a year earlier. Experts call the reason for the "gray" mining of cryptocurrencies, TASS reports today with reference to Evgeny Vechkanov, Development Director of the Irkutsk Electric Grid Company.

According to power engineers, residents of the region are massively engaged in the production of cryptocurrencies, equipping mining farms at home, in summer cottages and in other accessible places. At the same time, the threat to the energy security of the region is growing, as the load on the power grid is sharply increasing, emergency shutdowns have become more frequent.

Meanwhile, the energy consumed by mining farms is paid at the usual tariffs for the population, and not at prices for entrepreneurial activity - the cost of energy for merchants is four times higher.

According to the information of the Baikal Energy Company, already in the first half of January, seven Boeing-737 liners loaded with mining equipment arrived in the capital of the Angara region. It is also transported by numerous heavy trucks on highways. The equipment comes to the Irkutsk region from China, where it has become unnecessary and is sold almost for next to nothing due to the recent ban on use in this country.

The problem related to the load on the energy system of the region was formulated by Governor Igor Kobzev. He sent his proposals to the Government of the Russian Federation and found the support of the Cabinet.
