Chubais named a way to avoid the consequences of the carbon tax of the EU

To avoid the negative consequences of the "carbon tax" that the European Union plans to introduce, it is possible by introducing a carbon price. This was stated by Anatoly Chubais, Special Representative of the President of Russia for Relations with International Organizations on Sustainable Development, RBC reports.

According to him, paying for carbon is the most painful and difficult issue that was discussed at the government meeting on February 11. Sakhalin Oblast was chosen as the first region to test the emissions trading system.

Chubais expressed the opinion that Russia will face "a completely different life" if carbon pricing is introduced.

“But you see, we need to relate this logic to factors that we cannot influence. One of them is a cross-border carbon tax,” he said.

The Special Representative added that the European Parliament had previously proposed to postpone the start of the carbon tax to 2025 and to abandon the exemption for European producers to provide free emissions allowances by the end of 2028 instead of 2035.

"What does this mean? They now have a price on the exchange - $ 100 per ton of carbon dioxide. 50% of quotas are free, that is, the effective rate is $50 per ton. By 2030, it will be $100, excluding dynamics. If you deposit $100 now, it will be a completely different life,” Chubais said.

Earlier it was reported that the authorities discussed the carbon "fork" for Russia.
