Russia-Austria threatens to block EU decision on nuclear power

Russia (bbabo.net) - Austria has threatened a lawsuit against the European Commission's plans to classify nuclear power as a sustainable source of energy, writes the Kronen Zeitung newspaper.

The Austrians were supported by Germany, as well as Spain, Denmark and Luxembourg, declaring their rejection of the plans of the European Union. "This move will send a false message to investors and the whole society," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said after talks with his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen. Politicians believe that decisions on energy should be "strictly scientific".

The European Commission is currently still studying the official opinions of the 27 member states before making a formal decision on energy. The law is considered final after four months, unless it is rejected by a simple majority in the European Parliament or a qualified majority in the 20 EU states. Both are considered unlikely, experts say.

The BBC television and radio station notes that the European Union, after two years of deliberation, has recorded natural gas and nuclear fuel as clean energy sources, despite the dissatisfaction of environmentalists, the largest economy in Germany and several other countries. Against the backdrop of the energy crisis and the growing use of coal in various regions, the European Commission came to the conclusion that nuclear power plants and gas stations will not interfere, but will help Europe to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Failure to recognize them as green would seriously complicate obtaining permits for the construction of new nuclear and gas-fired power plants and increase the cost of attracting financing for these projects.
