Stoltenberg announced the strengthening of the presence of NATO in the event of an escalation in Ukraine

Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, said that NATO could strengthen its presence in the territory of the allies in the east in the event of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“If Russia again uses force against Ukraine and invades Ukraine, then we will have to seriously consider the need to further strengthen our presence in the eastern part of the alliance,” Stoltenberg said.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance called the meeting of the Russia-NATO Council "a difficult but important discussion."

On January 12, the first meeting of the Russia-NATO Council in 2.5 years was held at the alliance's headquarters in Brussels. The meeting lasted about four hours. The Russian interdepartmental delegation included representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. On behalf of the alliance, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg chaired the meeting.

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft security guarantees from the United States and NATO. In the document, the parties undertake to eliminate all existing infrastructure for the deployment of nuclear weapons outside their territory, exercise restraint in military planning and during exercises to reduce the risks of possible dangerous situations, and not take actions that affect each other's security.
