Russia - A painting with a view of Venice was shown in the Moscow region, under which an image of Pskov was found

Russia (bbabo.net), - The "New Jerusalem" Museum is hosting the exhibition "The ABC of a Masterpiece", which presents works by Russian artists of different times and styles. Among them is the painting "Venice" by Konstantin Gorbatov, painted in 1931.

Gorbatov was born in 1876 in Stavropol-on-Volga. Already in Soviet times, during the construction of the Kuibyshev reservoir, most of the city was flooded, the city of Togliatti was built nearby.

Gorbatov studied in St. Petersburg, in 1912 he worked as a boarder at the Academy of Arts in Rome, and at the invitation of Maxim Gorky came to him on the island of Capri. It was there that he emigrated already from Soviet Russia in 1922. First he lived in Italy, and then in Berlin, including during the war.

Gorbatov died on May 24, 1945, and his archive and paintings were taken to the USSR. In 1960 they were transferred to the New Jerusalem Museum.

Living in Europe, Konstantin Gorbatov created paintings with views of ancient Russian cities. This is both "View of the Old City" and "Sunken City". The artist traveled a lot in Russia before the revolution. And he painted Russian paintings from memory and sketches, already traveling around Europe in the 1920s and 1930s.

So in 2015, an X-ray fluorescence analysis of the Venetian landscape, which was painted in 1931, revealed views of old Pskov under the top image. When the Pskov sketch appeared, it is not exactly established. But most likely, according to New Jerusalem, it was already created in Europe, either according to old sketches or from memory.

Now at the exhibition you can see the painting itself with the Venetian landscape, and the sketch that was found under the top layer.

The ABC of Masterpiece exhibition will run until June 19.
