Russia - Infectious disease doctor told how two strains of COVID-19 spread

Russia (bbabo.net), - In the Samara region, about 60% of people with a new coronavirus infection have an omicron strain, and the rest have a delta strain. In the former, the disease is mild, in the latter it is often severe. This was told by the chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health of the region for infectious diseases Elena Strebkova in an interview with the SDRC of the Samara region.

- That wave and that high incidence, naturally, are caused by "omicron", - Elena Strebkova speaks. - But on the example of patients who are now hospitalized, we see that the "delta" also remained. For two or three days, there was an increase in hospitalizations of severe forms of coronavirus, with severe lung damage. This refers to the "delta" strain. We see colossal numbers that we could not have imagined before, that we will have up to four thousand cases per day in the Samara region, - the doctor explains. - But at the same time, we see that the disease is much easier and people do not end up in hospital beds in such numbers, not everyone develops pneumonia.

The doctor adds that the disease in any case cannot be called mild, with "omicron" if there is no pneumonia, then bronchitis and bronchiolitis occur quite often.

- And it is dangerous because it began to affect children - this is the biggest problem in the current epidemic. Almost everyone can get sick with Omicron. And those who have already been ill with coronavirus, and who have been vaccinated, fall ill in this wave in the same way, they simply endure the disease more easily, ”the doctor says.

As of February 11, 3,600 new cases of covid were detected in the Samara region.

Armen Benyan, Head of the Ministry of Health of the Samara Region:

- Today we are recording record rates of SARS and COVID-19. There are about 50,000 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 and about 50,000 patients with a diagnosis of SARS on outpatient treatment. At the same time, the maximum number of outpatients was previously recorded in October-November 2021 - 65,000 people. Today, there are already 100,000 cases, which is one and a half times the peak value, and the number of patients is increasing every day.
