The Pasternak House, as the locals call it, is actually unfit for habitation after a fire in 2017. However, it has the status of a residential building. In 2019, the building was declared emergency and is subject to resettlement.

Currently, residents have been evicted from it, except for one apartment. This property has several owners with whom it is impossible to negotiate. The controversial issue of providing housing to replace the unusable will have to be resolved in court. The meeting is scheduled for February 28th.

Restoration of the historic building will be possible only after its transfer to the ownership of the municipality. “It is very important for us to preserve the building and its history. We have been actively engaged in this for several years,” says the deputy head of the administration.

In the future, the Pasternak House is supposed to be leased for 49 years on preferential terms of 1 ruble per square meter with the burden of restoring the historical appearance of the building.

At one time, the family of Boris Pasternak's uncle Joseph Kaufman, who headed the local hospital, lived in this house. There is a version that it was Kaufman who became the prototype of Doctor Zhivago. Pasternak lived with him in 1920.
