NATO Secretary General confirms intention to strengthen military presence in Eastern Europe

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed his intention to strengthen the military presence in Eastern Europe in connection with the tense situation around Ukraine. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“The defense ministers of the alliance countries will discuss next week how we can strengthen our presence in the eastern direction,” he said at a press conference at a military base in Romania.

Stoltenberg noted that NATO is considering the possibility of deploying new battle groups not only in Romania, but also in other countries of the Black Sea region.

The decision to expand the alliance in the eastern direction in the long term will be made in the spring of 2022.

Earlier, the media reported that NATO approved the proposal of the military to deploy multinational contingents in Eastern Europe, presumably in Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia. Troops for contingents can provide the United States and France. These measures are a reaction to the "behavior of Russia."
