Russia (bbabo.net), - Most cases of coronavirus infection in Moscow and St. Petersburg are due to the Omicron strain. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova.

“Today we see that already about 80% of all identified, sequenced viruses, coronaviruses are “omicron”. Here it has practically already conquered its territory,” the agency’s interlocutor noted.

According to her, the remaining 20% ​​of cases of COVID-19 account for the "delta" strain, which is especially dangerous for people with weak immunity and chronic diseases.

Popova noted that with the advent of omicron, an increase in the number of infections is observed among working people from 30 to 49 years old and adolescents from 15 to 18 years old. Elderly people, on the contrary, have become less likely to get sick with COVID-19.

Recall that a new strain of coronavirus was detected in South Africa. The World Health Organization has classified it as a "worrisome" and has given it the name "omicron". According to scientists, it has 32 mutations in the S-protein necessary for the pathogen to infect cells.
