Passed through the Ferghana Range

The tunneling work has been completed, which will become part of the largest tunnel in the Tien Shan. The object, which has no analogues in sovereign Kyrgyzstan yet, appeared on the Kok-Art pass of the Ferghana Range. One of the most difficult sections of the alternative north-south highway is laid along it.

According to the Ministry of Transport of the Republic, the adit is part of an automobile tunnel, the total length of which will reach almost four kilometers. Its height and width are four meters. The adit will serve as a spare tunnel, through which, in case of an emergency, people and vehicles can be evacuated from the main one. They pierced it simultaneously from both sides of the ridge. Two groups of builders walked towards each other for several months.

Meanwhile, the tunneling of the main tunnel is still going on. The work is expected to be completed within the next few months. The height of the arch of the main tunnel is nine, and its width is ten meters. This, according to the builders, is enough to ensure free two-lane traffic for motor vehicles.

For comparison: the width of the currently largest operating tunnel in the Tien Shan - named after Kolbaev at the Too-Ashuu pass (section of the Bishkek-Osh road, through which transport links between the northern and southern regions of Kyrgyzstan are now carried out) - is slightly more than six, and the height of the vault reaches 4.5 meters.

Dossier

Construction of the alternative north-south route began in 2014. Its length will be 433 kilometers. A large-scale infrastructure project is being implemented with funds provided by foreign creditors. The new road is expected to be put into operation in 2024. The new highway will make it possible to unload the Bishkek-Osh highway, which is currently the only highway linking the northern and southern regions of the country. The alternative route is expected to reduce the cost of passenger and freight transportation between the regions, facilitate access to promising deposits and contribute to the development of tourism.
