Lithuania to accept additional contingent from Germany for NATO battalion

This week, Lithuania will receive an additional contingent from Germany to the NATO combined battalion. This was reported on the website of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.

It is noted that an additional number of troops will be sent to the Baltic state due to the situation on the border with Ukraine and the "deterioration of the security situation in the region."

In 2017, the composite battalions of the North Atlantic Alliance were deployed in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland "to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO." In Lithuania, the battalion is commanded by the FRG. It consists of 1.2 thousand military personnel from several NATO countries.

Earlier, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said that a permanent combat grouping of the alliance under the leadership of France could appear in Romania.

Last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed his intention to strengthen the military presence in Eastern Europe in connection with the tense situation around Ukraine.
