Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the US found China's support for Russia's position on Europe "disturbing". He announced this at a briefing, TASS reports.

“Their joint statement of February 4 obviously shows that China has decided to support Russia in regards to what is happening in Europe. This is very worrisome and, frankly, destabilizes the situation in Europe even more,” he said.

Earlier, a senior US State Department official commented on a joint statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping following their February 4 meeting.

According to a senior US official, this meeting should be an opportunity for Beijing to encourage Moscow to diplomacy and de-escalate the situation in Ukraine.

The State Department spokesman also expressed the opinion that the joint statement by the leaders of the Russian Federation and China reflects the approach that these two states "have been adhering to for some time, namely the approach of rapprochement."
