The first book published in Belarus counts five centuries

"Book of Hours for the Laity", which is a collection of church messages intended for traveling wanderers, is considered the premiere book message of Francysk Skaryna to future generations, who published it exactly five hundred years ago on Belarusian lands. The unique edition now occupies an honorable place in the national library of Belarus, where it is confirmed that this "Small travel book" is the only copy in the country.

The exhibition "Through the Ages", dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the "Small travel book" by Francysk Skaryna, presents the works of students, undergraduates and teachers, made in letterpress printing and computer graphics, BelTA informs.

The first printed folio, bibliophiles explain, which is often referred to as a "book", is a collection of church books in a small format. But, according to them, "this is more than just one edition: 18 books collected together in one binding." They are decorated with unique engravings, headpieces and initials, and nine books have an afterword by Skaryna himself.

True, no complete copies of the Little Travel Book have been preserved. The most detailed versions of it are available in the libraries of Moscow, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg. And the most comprehensive version of Skaryna's edition is stored in the Russian National Library - 20 books.

Most of the works presented at the anniversary exhibition in the Belarusian capital, the agency explains, are the reconstruction of the first title of the "Small Travel Book", which is recreated thanks to the use of a peculiar font and composition of the 16th century edition, and the rest of the works are the result of experiments to create new font styles based on its model. pages.

Modern technologies, the possibilities of computer graphics and digital printing have given artists a wide scope for self-expression. Impressive, for example, is the variety of spelling options and font compositions.

"Graphic and figurative experiments with historical forms of fonts, while preserving the characteristic features of the "Small Road Book", Skorinov's aesthetics, and decorative features, are a tribute to the anniversary of Belarusian book printing and a significant contribution to the development of Belarusian type culture," the museum noted.

By the way, the exposition was supplemented by publications dedicated to the activities of the Belarusian pioneer printer, research and facsimile of a unique collection for travelers, as well as postcards from the "Mastatskaya Skaryniyana" series from the library's collection.

"A landmark event in the cultural life of the country through the centuries inspires modern Belarusian book printing and art to a creative response, enthusiasm, development and prosperity," the cultural institution stressed to the agency.
