On December 30, telephone conversations between Putin and Biden took place. The President of the United States, in a conversation with Putin, mentioned possible "large-scale sanctions", he warned in response that this would be a major mistake that could lead to a complete rupture of relations. The parties agreed to continue negotiations after the New Year.
Prior to this, the presidents communicated on December 7 over a closed line, paying special attention to the Ukrainian crisis. As noted in the White House, the US president threatened his Russian counterpart with a tough response in the event of a military escalation in Ukraine.
