The capital of Thailand will receive a new official name in foreign languages

Thailand's capital Bangkok will change its official name in foreign languages. From now on, it is supposed to be called Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, which means "City of Angels - Great Capital". In fact, that's what it's called in Thai. And the English "Bangkok" has been used so far for the convenience of designating the city.

But now, according to the decision of the Royal Academic Council of Thailand, the time has come to change the status quo. As noted, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal of the statement of the office of the prime minister on the adoption of a new register of geographical names. It reflects the latest decisions of the Royal Scientific Council, bringing geographical names in line with changing conditions. As soon as this document is approved by a special legal commission, the changes will come into force.

Although the name of the Thai capital in foreign languages will change, the former "Bangkok" will also be used, it will be written in brackets.

As part of the reform, it is also planned to change the spelling in Thai of a number of other cities in the world, for example, the capitals of Italy and Myanmar.

By the way, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon is not quite the exact name of the capital of Thailand, this is just an abbreviation, since there are more than 40 separate significant elements in the full version, which makes it the longest name of a capital city in the world.
