Russia - Young filmmakers will be able to receive grants from the Mayor of Moscow

Russia (bbabo.net), - Head of the Department of Culture of the City of Moscow, general director of "Moskino" and representatives of Moscow film schools spoke at a press conference in TASS about what young filmmakers in the capital can now expect.

Alexander Kibovsky, head of the Moscow Department of Culture, recalled the meeting of representatives of the cinematographic community with the mayor of Moscow in August 2021, when they discussed measures to support young filmmakers, who the mayor’s office is ready to provide to anyone who seeks to “capture the city as we see it today.”

At the press conference, an order of the Department of Culture was signed on the introduction of support measures for young filmmakers. This year, young people studying at various Moscow film schools will receive the same grants from the Mayor of Moscow to support filmmakers that already exist for professional filmmakers.

Moskino General Director Natalya Mokritskaya emphasized that at last year's meeting with the mayor, it was not Moskino but the students, masters, curators and directors of Moscow film schools who initiated the introduction of new support measures. Thus, Mikhail Vrubel, the founder of the film and television school "Industriya" and the general director of the "Vodorod" film studio, came up with the initiative to introduce scholarships for young filmmakers from the Mayor of Moscow. The proposed measure of support in the form of scholarships, according to Vrubel, is extremely important because "film education, in terms of cost, is by definition very expensive. This means that today not all potentially talented students can afford to study in a private school" .

To solve this problem, the city allocated 10 scholarships for free education for five Moscow film schools: "Moscow School of Cinema" for the course "directing"; "Moscow school of new cinema" for the course "director's workshop"; "Higher Film School "Arka" for the course "directing workshop of Nikolai Lebedev"; "School of Cinema and Television "Industry" for the course "film directing" and "Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors named after G.N. Danelia".

However, in the future, representatives of film schools hope that the number of scholarships awarded will be increased to 50. Candidates for scholarships will be selected by the commissions of each particular film school for further submission of Moskino's candidacies.

In addition, as Mikhail Vrubel noted, starting this year, student short films can qualify for subsidies from the Mayor of Moscow at the level of adult feature films if they reflect the image of today's city. Previously, the opportunity to receive a grant was provided only to the creators of documentaries, full-length and short films, which were necessarily released, which deprived students of Moscow film schools of the chance to receive support from the city, since student works are almost never available for viewing in cinemas. Now, as noted by the general director of Moskino, film schools can apply for financial support, which can range from one million to three million per film. Applications will be accepted from January 1 to March 31, 2022.

Moskino will also create a student center for meetings and film screenings on the basis of the modernized Salyut cinema. This will allow holding meetings with the audience and discussion clubs, organizing premieres of student films and graduation theses. Events are planned to be held several times a month, starting from March-April. To organize events, film schools will need to send applications to Moskino.

In addition, an initiative was put forward to organize a video channel on Youtube or Rutube platforms, which would make it possible to create a small online platform where one could watch the best films about Moscow, the creators of which are precisely the students of Moscow film schools. Content on the platform will be available for free.

Head of the workshop of the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors G.N. Daneliya Vladimir Khotinenko also stressed that the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors are actively discussing the idea of creating an almanac of student works "I'm walking around Moscow 2022", which will contain 5-6 films about modern Moscow "with the spirit of the famous Daneliev film "I'm walking along Moscow".

At the end of the press conference, Natalya Mokritskaya, general director of Moskino, appealed to young filmmakers with an appeal: "Take pictures of Moscow, love Moscow. It deserves it."
