British Bloomberg columnist Max Hastings called Germany a "weak link" in the West due to its independent stance.

Hastings called belated the statement of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to stop the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the event of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, and explained this by Germany's alleged "dependence" on Moscow. Hasting also launched into historical reasoning, stating that the predecessor of Germany - Prussia - was the most aggressive state in Europe.

“Nevertheless, today Germany, the heir of Prussia, is the weak link that hinders any attempt to strengthen the defense and security of Europe,” writes Hastings.

He also accused the European members of NATO of trying to shift the responsibility of strengthening defense capabilities to the United States.
