The State Duma threatened the United States with bases in Latin America in response to actions in Ukraine

Russia may resort to deploying military bases in Latin American countries if Moscow fails to agree with Washington on mutual security guarantees. Yuri Shvytkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, stated this in a conversation with, commenting on the Foreign Ministry's statement about its readiness to resort to "measures of a military-technical nature."

“We have enough military-technical measures that will force the United States to take care of its own security, and not Ukraine, which is too far away from them. For example, the deployment of military bases in Latin America may be part of the answer. The United States is afraid of this, because it will be close enough there for our missiles to fly up. I think that the Americans do not really want the missiles to reach New York or Washington quickly,” the deputy said.

From the deputy's point of view, Moscow does not want such a scenario to develop and is doing everything to resolve all disputes with the United States through political and diplomatic means. But, according to him, there is a strengthening of the NATO military contingent near the Russian borders, including in Poland, Romania and the Baltic countries.

The day before, the Russian Foreign Ministry published Moscow's written response to Washington's reaction to the demands for security guarantees. In particular, it says that "in the absence of the US readiness to negotiate, Moscow may resort to measures of a military-technical nature."
