In Ukraine, they believe that the recognition of the DPR and LPR by Russia will be beneficial to Kiev

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that the recognition of the DPR and LPR by Russia will allow him to refuse to comply with the Minsk agreements. Strana.ua writes about this, citing sources close to Zelensky's office.

According to the interlocutors of the publication, the Ukrainian authorities are not going to conduct direct negotiations with the self-proclaimed republics and do not want to amend the constitution on their special status.

“The recognition by Russia of the republics on Bankovaya is considered a very good option, since this will bury the Minsk agreements so unloved by the Ukrainian authorities. This is also why Zelensky has no desire to somehow move along Minsk-2. On the contrary, there is a desire to drag out the process until Russia recognizes the DPR and the problem will thus be solved by itself,” the source explained.

He added that the President of Ukraine plans to take advantage of the aggravation of the situation in the south-east of the country in order not to fulfill the promises on Donbass that he made to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

On February 15, State Duma deputies supported a draft resolution developed by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation on an appeal to President Vladimir Putin with a request to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. 351 members of the State Duma voted for its adoption, 16 people opposed, and one more abstained.
