Japan expressed readiness to consider tough measures against Russia because of Ukraine

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi announced the readiness of the Japanese authorities to cooperate with the world community on "tough measures" against Russia because of the situation around Ukraine, according to the website of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

He said that the decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics and the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance are "an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine" and "a violation of international law."

“They are absolutely unacceptable and Japan strongly condemns them. Japan will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate a strong response, including sanctions, in cooperation with the international community,” Hayashi said.

Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned Russia's actions to recognize the self-proclaimed republics of Donbass and called it a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The decree recognizing independence was signed by Vladimir Putin on February 21. With a corresponding request, the heads of the republics Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik turned to him because of the aggravation of the conflict with Ukraine.
