Former United States President Donald Trump called Russia's decision to recognize the sovereignty of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics "brilliant." Trump said this in an interview with the American podcast "The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show".
According to the ex-head of the White House, the Russian Federation turned out to be the most powerful peacekeeping force in the region.
“When I saw it on TV yesterday [February 22], I said, ‘This is brilliant. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin declares most of Ukraine independent. Oh, that's great," Trump said.
According to the 45th President of the United States, Putin intends to act as a peacemaker.
“We could use it on our southern border. This is the most powerful peacekeeping force I have ever seen,” Trump added.
Trump also noted that the crisis in Ukraine during his presidency was in a calmer phase. It's about the relationship between Trump and Putin.
“I knew Putin very well. I got along great with him,” Trump said.
The former president also noted that Putin does a lot for Russia.
On February 21, Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. In the West, Russia's actions were regarded as a violation of international law.
Earlier, the United States imposed sanctions against Russia's sovereign debt.
