Finland announces readiness to join NATO

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said at a parliamentary meeting that the country is ready to apply for membership in NATO if the question of its national security arises. It is reported by broadcasting corporation YLE.

According to her, at the moment the threat of a major war is more real than at any time in many years. Marin stressed that Russia's actions will have long-term consequences for bilateral relations between the Russian Federation and Finland.

“Finland is ready to apply to join NATO if the issue of national security becomes acute,” Marin stressed.

Earlier, Finnish President Sauli Niiniste said he sees no reason to revise the non-participation policy in NATO, but acknowledged that the discussion is underway.

According to Niiniste, Finland will continue them, and depending on the further situation in Ukraine, this may become much more likely.

The day before, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that the country retains the opportunity to join NATO.

According to him, the Finnish government's report on foreign and security policy is based on providing room for maneuver and opportunities for choice.
