U.S. energy companies ask White House not to impose sanctions on Russian uranium

Several major US energy companies, including Duke Eney Corp and Exelon Corp, have asked the US authorities to withdraw Russian uranium from possible sanctions that Washington is developing because of the crisis around Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters, citing its sources.

As noted, the US nuclear power industry depends on the supply of cheap uranium from the Russian Federation, without them the price of electricity will increase sharply. About half of the fuel required for the operation of American nuclear power plants, the United States receives from Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

As noted by the US National Institute of Energy, at the moment the country does not conduct its own mining and processing of uranium. Several companies have said they would like to restart domestic production if they can sign long-term supply contracts with nuclear power producers. However, the question remains open for now.
