World jiu-jitsu champion Airat Kalimullin dies in Kazan

Russia and the CIS (bbabo.net) - A well-known Muslim athlete, world champion in jiu-jitsu Airat Kalimullin died in Kazan today. Earlier, the Muslims of Tatarstan announced a fundraiser for his treatment.

Kalimullin brought up many Muslim athletes. Mufti of Tatarstan Kamil Samigullin expressed his condolences on his death.

“Today, the Muslim ummah of Tatarstan has suffered a heavy loss. We all sincerely cheered for him and prayed for his recovery. I, as a student of Airat Damirovich, thank everyone who took part in his treatment and supported him in word and deed during the last difficult period of his life. But the Almighty took himself, considered it good for him. He was a sincere Muslim, he loved the Almighty and the Prophet with all his heart, he always lived and worked according to his conscience, he was fair and merciful,” said the mufti.

Airat Kalimullin was the President of the Ju-Jitsu Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan. Born April 30, 1961 in Bavly. He worked as a sambo and judo wrestling coach at Ak Bars and Tasma Youth Sports School. He was one of the coaches of the USSR national team in preparation for the Goodwill Games (1992, USA). He was the world champion in jiu-jitsu among veterans (2013, UAE), master of sports in sambo and judo, holder of a black belt in jiu-jitsu. He was the organizer of the annual all-Russian jiu-jitsu competition for the Marjani Cup. Trained many Muslim athletes. In the last months of his life, Airat Kalimullin struggled with a difficult diagnosis - prostate cancer.
