Rospotrebnadzor published alarming data on the spread of HIV in Russia in September. According to official information, these figures are 10 times higher than in the European Union.

However, in some regions of the Urals and Siberia, the risk of HIV infection is 20 and 35 times higher than in Europe, and is already comparable with African countries, according to the Novaya Gazeta article. The Kemerovo Region is the anti-record holder. In this region, three times more new cases are detected than the national average.

The study notes that in the early 2000s, the increase in incidence decreased after the sharp surge in the 90s.

But already in 2005, the incidence began to rise again. Moreover, the second wave was associated with the massive spread of promiscuous sexual intercourse.

“The second wave was associated with the fact that HIV went beyond the group of drug users and began to spread sexually,” says Andrey Zlobin, CEO of H-Clinic, which specializes in treating people with HIV.

In 2017, the number of new cases of transmission of the virus reached a record 107 thousand people. In 2019, these figures dropped to 97 thousand due to the coronavirus pandemic, which sharply reduced human contacts. However, it is difficult to say how sustainable the current decline will be.
