Journalist convicted of assassination attempt on president in Kazakhstan

Russia and the CIS (bbabo.net) - A local journalist and lawyer, Ayan Atygaev, has been convicted in Kazakhstan in the case of preparing an assassination attempt on the country's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Sputnik Kyrgyzstan reports.

The court sentenced the man to 17 years to serve in a maximum security prison.

According to the Kazakhstani special services, the defendant worked for foreign intelligence. He was arrested at the end of March. During searches in his house, they found a sniper rifle with a silencer, drugs and money.

According to law enforcement officers, the rifle was imported into the country in parts that were carefully disguised.

As a result, the court found the defendant guilty under all the articles incriminated to him, including treason, illegal possession of weapons, and preparations for an assassination attempt on the head of state.

It is indicated that Atygaev has worked in the Kursiv and Izvestiya-Kazakhstan publications as a journalist. He also worked as a lawyer in Astana.
