The European Union intends to accuse Iran of supplying combat drones to Russia

Ukraine (bbabo.net), - The European Union intends to investigate whether Iran is supplying drones to the Russian side for use in Ukraine. This was announced by Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau after a meeting of EU ministers in Luxembourg, WPolityce reports.

According to Rau, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, discussed the issue with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and "faced with extremely categorical denial" that the drones used in Ukraine were supplied by Iran.

Despite this, the EU will conduct an investigation, and if it turns out that the drones are Iranian, "there is a consensus among EU foreign ministers" that sanctions should be imposed on Tehran, he added.

The United States also suspects Tehran of supplying drones to Moscow for use in military operations in Ukraine.

“Earlier, our French and British allies said that Iran’s supply of these UAVs to Russia is a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said, adding that Washington shared this view.

Resolution 2231 approved the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the "six" mediators: Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States. The agreement provided for the lifting of sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limiting its nuclear program and guarantees that it would not develop nuclear weapons.

The United States claimed back in the summer that Washington had information about Iran's plans to provide Russia with up to several hundred drones, including those capable of carrying weapons. In particular, Jake Sullivan, presidential assistant for national security, said that the Russian side was interested in the Shahed-191 and Shahed-129 combat drones. The Iranian Foreign Ministry did not confirm this, calling the US accusations unfounded, and the representative of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov called such reports stuffing.

In recent days, the Ukrainian authorities have been reporting attacks on infrastructure using kamikaze drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky, among other things, says that some of them were carried out with the help of Iranian drones, emphasizing that the country needs modern air defense systems.
