Israel - The Orthodox call will begin on April 1: three scenarios for the development of events

Israel (bbabo.net), - The government at the very last moment (mere minutes before the deadline) appealed to the High Court of Justice (High Court of Justice) with a request for a one-day delay in filing a response to the claims regarding the law on the conscription of the ultra-Orthodox into the army . At the same time, Ynet obtained a document with a “special opinion” from legal adviser Gali Baharav-Miar on the morning of March 28, according to which, as of April 1, the state will have to take measures to ensure the conscription of the ultra-Orthodox into the army, and after a short adaptation period (until the end of the current academic year) to stop funding yeshivas that do not comply with the conscription law.

The legal advisor explains that at the end of March 2024, the temporary government order allowing deferments from military conscription for yeshiva students will expire. Due to the fact that a new regulatory document has not been approved, from April 1 the government will no longer have the authority to transfer money to yeshivas that refuse to send their students to military service. The Ministry of Defense will have to take care of the recruitment process itself.

As Ynet political commentator Moran Azoulay explains, the government is trying to extend a temporary order allowing the defense minister to refrain from enforcing the conscription of yeshiva students into military service. This temporary order expires March 31st.

How will events develop now? Political observer of the 11KAN TV channel Yaara Shapira sees several options.

1. Gradual entry into force of the law on conscription

It is absolutely clear that from April 1, none of the Orthodox will join the army and will not lose their budgets. This is more of an April Fool's joke, in which, as usual, there is only a grain of joke. Most likely, the High Court will agree to a stepwise introduction of the law on conscription. And each such stage will put pressure on ultra-Orthodox politicians, forcing them to soften their position.

2. Another source of funding for yeshivas

Benjamin Netanyahu promised ultra-Orthodox leaders to use an “additional option” if the High Court does not accept a compromise proposal. The talk was about a certain private bill, which the head of government would introduce at the beginning of the summer session of the Knesset (if, of course, there was a need).

As political observers explain, the idea is to redirect money to finance yeshivas from another source. Yes, this will require Knesset approval and it is not at all a fact that it will be received, but in this case it is important for Netanyahu to gain time and prevent the collapse of the government.

3. Elections

This is the last possible option. It will be used if all other solutions fail. Ultra-Orthodox yeshivas cannot survive for long without government funding. This will force ultra-Orthodox leaders to take political steps, including splitting the government.

Of course, Benjamin Netanyahu will try to prevent this “last” option. So far he has won one day. It is likely that new attempts will be made to find a way out of the crisis.
