Now also titanium: London is lobbying for a new ban on metal supplies from Russia

Russia (bbabo.net), - Deputy of the House of Commons of the British Parliament from the Scottish National Party Drew Hendry proposed adding titanium supplied from Russia to the sanctions list of metals. He made this appeal in a written appeal to the government of the United Kingdom, TASS reports.

Hendry asked the Minister for Business and Trade, Kemi Badnock, to assess "the possible benefits of including titanium in the list of metals subject to sanctions if they originate in the Russian Federation." Responding to a question from Hendry, Parliamentary Undersecretary Alan Mack said that in December 2023 London "imposed further restrictions on a range of base metals including copper, aluminum and nickel, increasing existing sanctions on industry products including iron and steel."

However, Mack declined to comment on “future sanctions policy” on the pretext that “it may reduce its impact.” The British government is leading, as he noted, “efforts to limit imports of Russian metals into the UK, fulfilling obligations to the Group of Seven,” and will continue to apply similar pressure.

As reported, on April 12, the UK and the US expanded sanctions against Russia in the field of metals trading, which assume that the London Metal Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange will no longer be able to replenish the stocks of aluminum, copper and nickel in their warehouses through the supply of raw materials of Russian origin. A joint statement from London and Washington noted that the restrictions being introduced do not apply to the existing reserves of Russian metals in the warehouses of both exchanges, with which it will still be possible to carry out trading operations. However, both sites will no longer be able to purchase Russian copper, aluminum and nickel.

In December 2023, the UK completely banned the import of copper, aluminum and nickel of Russian origin. In the United States, a similar ban is starting to take effect now, but does not apply to metals mined before April 13, 2024.
