Yonhap: DPRK may have launched a hypersonic missile

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Korea (ROK) has provided details of the DPRK's missile tests.

As reported in the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan (OKNSH of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan), the launch of the "unidentified projectile" was carried out at 08:10 local time (2:10 am Moscow time) from land towards the Sea of Japan. It has been officially suggested that it was a ballistic missile. As noted by the Yonhap news agency, rumors circulated at an unofficial level that it was a short-range hypersonic missile. It is possible that this was a re-launch of the DPRK's hypersonic missile "Hwaseong-8", launched on September 28 last year.

"At present, our troops are monitoring the situation and possible re-launches," said the OKNSh of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, adding that they, together with the Americans, continue to analyze information on the launch.

Local media noted that the launch was the first military action by the DPRK in 2022. Most likely, North Korea is now conducting regular maneuvers, within the framework of which the launch was made.

The last time Pyongyang launched missiles 78 days ago: on October 19, 2021, a ballistic missile was successfully launched from a submarine.
