Moscow court arrests 8 suspected REvil hackers for 2 months

According to RIA Novosti, on January 15, 2022, a Moscow court arrested 8 suspected members of the REvil hacker group for 2 months. Court sessions were held behind closed doors. The court released all the names and some photos of the alleged REvil members detained. They are suspected of developing and implementing malware, crypto extortion, stealing money from the bank accounts of foreign citizens and cashing them out, including by purchasing expensive goods.

Investigators of the Ministry of Internal Affairs insisted on the arrest of the suspects for carrying out special investigative measures with them in the pre-trial detention center. The term of detention of the alleged hackers may be extended.

All detained members of REvil in Russia were charged under Part 2 of Art. 187 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - illegal circulation of means of payment. The maximum punishment under this article is up to seven years in prison.

The court took into custody until March 14, 2022 in this case: Zayets Artem, Puzyrevsky Dmitry, Malozemov Alexei, Korotaev Dmitry, Khansvyarov Ruslan, Golovachuk Mikhail, Bessonov Andrey and Muromsky Roman.

The lawyer of the arrested alleged REvil hacker Roman Muromsky said that his client denies involvement in the group and pleads not guilty. Aleksey Malozemov's defense also announced that they would file a complaint against his arrest.

On December 30, 2021, the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case on the illegal circulation of means of payment (187 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) by a group of hackers. The deadline for the investigation of this case is March 30, 2022.

On January 14, 2022, the FSB of Russia announced that all members of the REvil hacker group were detained during the special operation. Law enforcement agencies specified that they detained 14 members of the hacker group in this case, confiscated over 426 million rubles, 600 thousand dollars, 500 thousand euros from them during searches. During the search at 25 addresses in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leningrad and Lipetsk regions, the special services seized all computer equipment and gained access to crypto wallets used to commit crimes.
