MSI Power Supply Photo Leak Shows Future PCIe 5.0 Power Connectors

The media has published photos of the upcoming MSI PCIe Gen 5 Ready MEG and MPG power supplies with next-generation connectors, up to 1300W Platinum, which are designed for next-generation GPUs.

Back in 2020, MSI was one of the first manufacturers to introduce its MPG GF series power supplies, which came bundled with a 12-pin Micro-Fit 3.0 power adapter for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Founders Edition graphics cards. The manufacturer also recently introduced its flagship 80 Plus Gold certified MPG A1000G power supply.

This year, MSI will also introduce its MEG line. It includes two brand new MSI MEG 80 Plus Platinum power supplies and three MPG 80 Plus Gold certified power supplies. The MSI MEG PSU lineup will include 1300W and 1000W units based on the new MSI G.I Engine to run the most power-hungry CPU/GPU combinations. On the other hand, MSI's MPG power supply line is designed for high-end PCs with 1000W, 850W and 750W models.

The lineup will include the following models: MSI MEG 1300W (with GI) 80 Plus Platinum, MSI MEG 1000W (with GI) 80 Plus Platinum, MSI MPG 1000W 80 Plus Gold, MSI MPG 850W 80 Plus Gold and MSI MPG 750W 80 Plus Gold.

The important thing to note here is that they are all fully PCIe Gen 5 compliant, which means the blocks will ship with a PCIe Gen 5 connector and the required PCIe Gen 5 cables.

The MSI MEG and MPG range will ship with a 12+4 pin to 12+4 pin cable and 2 x 8 pin to 1x 12+4 pin adapter cables.

The MEG series has a stylish design and gold accent plate, which is a well-known feature of the MEG line. The PCIe Gen 5.0 (12+4) male connector and cable are clearly visible in the images. The connector stands out from the rest of the connections. The same is true for MSI's MPG V2 line, which has a PCIe Gen 5 slot.

The MPG A1000G does not have a PCIe Gen 5 connector. However, the MPG V2 series has one 16-pin power connector that is rated for 600W power delivery, is PCIe Gen 5.0 compliant, and is not designed for legacy PCIe Gen 2 or Gen 3 cards.

Amphenol ICC introduces Minitek Pwr PCIe Gen 5 connector system. This new CEM 5.0 PCI Express 12VHPWR Auxiliary Hybrid Socket supports 600W GPU cards. The 12VHPWR connector is not designed to mate with the legacy PCI Express 2x3 and 2x4 12V auxiliary power connectors. The power pins on the 12VHPWR connector have a 3.00mm pitch, while the pins in the legacy 2x3 and 2x4 connectors have a larger pitch of 4.20mm. The new PCIe connector system (CEM5) is designed for power applications with up to 9.5A per pin (12 pins) and 4 signal pins that support signaling.

There is currently no pricing or availability information for the new range, but data is expected by Q2 2022.

In January, the PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) released the final version of the PCI Express 6.0 specification. The new bus generation doubles the data transfer rate per PCIe lane to 8 Gb/s per lane (x1) in each direction. The first server hardware with PCIe 6.0 support should hit the market in 12-18 months.
