MegaFon is the first among operators to launch VoLTE in international roaming

MegaFon subscribers will be the first to be able to make calls from abroad using VoLTE technology. The service is available to subscribers in Estonia, and is planned to be launched in Canada, the US, Korea, China and Japan by the end of the year.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) VoLTE technology became available to MegaFon subscribers in Russia in 2021. It allows you to establish a connection with a subscriber of any operator in a few seconds and provides clear sound during a conversation. Also, during the dialogue, the subscriber can use the mobile Internet.

VoLTE does not affect the cost of services and does not consume Internet traffic when calling from abroad, since calls are charged as voice connections under international roaming conditions.

“Foreign mobile operators are actively using VoLTE. Over time, the technology will allow 2G and 3G voice calls to be phased out, and some telecommunications companies have already announced such plans. By launching access to the service for Russian users now, we are acting proactively, because it is important for us to provide subscribers with a seamless transition to the new technology in international roaming,” said Vlad Volfson, Commercial Director of MegaFon.

VoLTE technology currently accounts for more than half of the voice traffic in MegaFon's network. Now the service is available to subscribers while traveling abroad.
