The Safe Internet League is losing members and is preparing for a reorganization

The Safe Internet League, which was founded by the owner of the Tsargrad TV channel Konstantin Malofeev, is reorganizing the board of trustees, the board and the composition of the participants. Telecom operators have already left it, and Internet companies have ceased to participate in the work of the organization.

According to Kommersant, Malofeev himself stopped supporting the league in 2021, but the organization was able to find new sources of funding.

According to information from SPARK-Interfax, MegaFon, by decision of the shareholders' meeting on February 2, left the Safe Internet League. Until February 8, the list of organization members on its website included Rostelecom, MegaFon, VimpelCom, MTS, Kaspersky Lab, the Mamba dating service, several small IT companies and non-profit foundations. However, now this section is empty and is "in the process of updating."

Rostelecom confirmed that they "left the LBI a long time ago." VimpelCom also "does not operate in the LBI." MegaFon explained that in 2021, together with other companies, they created their own Alliance to Protect Children in the Digital Environment. Kaspersky Lab is a member of the association, but in recent years has not taken an active part in its work.

The league said that the reorganization of the governing bodies is underway, and the charter and conditions for participation will also be changed. All processes will be completed by April.

The source of the publication says that since 2021 Malofeev “moved away from supporting the LBI”, the organization was looking for funding and “found a new patron”.

The Safe Internet League has been operating since 2010. In April 2018, it was headed by the daughter of Senator Elena Mizulina Ekaterina. In 2020, the LBI received 13.8 million rubles, but more up-to-date funding data is not available.

LBI expected to become the operator of the registry of web resources containing prohibited content, but the former head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Nikolai Nikiforov, transferred these powers to Roskomnadzor.

After the reorganization, the LBI may resume promoting the initiative to create a "white list" of Internet services. For its implementation, operators needed to install equipment for analyzing and filtering DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) traffic. They are already using such equipment as required by the Sovereign Internet Act, so the league may return to the idea of promoting whitelisting.

The last time the Safe Internet League reported that since the beginning of 2022, 1,617 materials had been identified that contained false information of public interest. The false information related to the coronavirus and vaccination, as well as events in Kazakhstan.
