Akamai buys hosting company Linode for $900 million

On February 15, 2022, Akamai, one of the oldest CDN providers, announced the purchase of cloud provider Linode. The amount of the deal is $900 million.

The parties explained that this collaboration will allow the geographically distributed network infrastructure of the Akamai content delivery network to become global - from the cloud to the edge. The acquisition will also enable Akamai to significantly expand its current portfolio of secure IaaS cloud services and enhance existing Edge solutions with Linode's hyperscale services to build, modernize and scale next-generation applications and services.

Linode founder and CEO Christopher Acker explained that the deal will not affect the performance of contracts and agreements with current customers and users of Linode services, but over time the company will offer completely new products and services using distributed storage and data transmission systems, as well as security platforms from Akamai.

Akamai plans to complete the purchase of Linode in the current quarter. Now the deal is being studied by antitrust regulators in several countries around the world, including the United States, Japan and the European Union.

Cloud provider Linode was founded in 2003. The company's headquarters is located in the USA. Linode has 11 geographically distributed data centers, including IT sites in the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, India, as well as in the UK, Germany and Japan. Linode positions itself as a cloud provider for startups, small and medium businesses or independent developers who are expensive to use complex and obscure AWS solutions overloaded with unnecessary services.
