A year after the ban on swearing in social networks, swearing in publications decreased by 1%

According to Medialogy, a year after the amendments banning obscenities and the use of profanity in Russian social networks came into force, the number of swear words in publications remained approximately at the same level as last year. Experts found a slight decrease in swearing by only 1%.

According to Medialogy statistics, in 2021 the company recorded 93.3 million use of swear words. In 2020, there were 94.4 million such publications. Most users expressed their emotions at the end of last year. So, on December 30, Medialogy recorded more than 380 thousand messages with obscene language.

Medialogy analyzed publications in posts and comments in the Russian-language segment of the social networks VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Telegram and TikTok, as well as on major forums and blogs.

RBC experts said that social networks are not particularly proactive in removing swear words, as they understand that they can lose user loyalty after that. Therefore, many sites simply do not comply with the requirements of the law, especially since they have not yet been fined for this.

On February 1, 2021, Federal Law No. 530-FZ of December 30, 2020 “On Amendments to the Federal Law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection” entered into force. According to this law, social networks must independently find, delete or block any content from users containing obscene language within a day. There are no sanctions for non-compliance with the law.

In the first week of February last year, a ban on swearing sparked its rise on social media in response. In fact, social networks responded obscenely to his ban.
