Psychologists have found out which profiles in dating apps are distrustful

Psychologists analyzed how people feel about sexualized photos on dating apps. An article about this was published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media.

In recent years, dating apps have become the main way for many people to find a partner. In them, participants can design their appearance as they wish: business, informal, family, or some other.

Researchers from the University of Arizona, led by Kung Yang, decided to find out how users perceive potential partners who publish photos with a hint of erotica. To do this, the scientists asked 262 students to evaluate a supposedly new dating service, which was actually created for research purposes. The profiles shown had a neutral textual description, only the photographs differed: half of them were sexualized, and half were not. On sexualized people posed in skimpy clothes, in defiant poses or exposed different parts of the body.

Participants in the experiment were shown two profiles of each type depicting people of the opposite sex. It turned out that volunteers rated profiles with more sexualized photos as less appropriate, less likeable, and less likely to seek long-term relationships. Characteristically, male profiles with erotic photos elicited a more negative reaction in women than in men when viewing sexualized profiles of women. Researchers attribute this to the existence of different norms of behavior for the two sexes.

It is worth noting that the study was conducted in the United States with the participation of Americans, while in other countries the patterns may be different.

Previously, scientists have found out why it is difficult for older people to restore details from memory.
