Fourth Quarter NAND Flash Sales Down 2.1% QoQ

In the fourth quarter of 2021, shipments of NAND flash memory in terms of information volume grew by only 3.3% compared to the third quarter, which is a significant slowdown in growth compared to almost 10% in the third quarter compared to the second. At the same time, the average selling price decreased by almost 5%, and the total industry revenue was $18.5 billion, which is 2.1% less than in the third quarter. According to analysts, this was primarily due to a decrease in purchasing demand for various goods and a shift in the market to oversupply, which led to a fall in contract prices. In the fourth quarter of 2021, with the exception of enterprise-class SSDs, which were limited by the lack of components, the prices of other products that use NAND flash, including eMMC modules, UFS, and client SSDs, fell.

TrendForce's 2021 NAND Flash sales summary is as follows: Despite signs of weakening in the second half of the year, numbers are still up significantly compared to 2020. Revenue reached $68.6 billion, up 21.1% from 2020.

Samsung reduced sales by 6.1%, as a result of which its market share decreased from 34.5% to 33.1%. Kioxia, in second place, saw its sales drop by 2.6%. Its share decreased from 19.3% to 19.2%. WDC was able to increase sales by 5.2%. The share of WDC increased from 13.2% to 14.2%. SK hynix increased sales by 2.8%, which led to an increase in its share from 13.5% to 14.1%. The Micron company reduced sales by 4.7%. The share of Micron decreased from 10.4% to 10.2%.

In the current quarter, the off-season decline in demand is expected to exacerbate the oversupply and lead to a further decline in contract prices for NAND, further reducing manufacturers' revenues.
