FT: Chinese Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei halved the supply of smartphones to Russia

Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei have halved deliveries of devices to Russia after February 24, according to the Financial Times. This is due to the events in Ukraine and the subsequent collapse of the ruble and Western sanctions.

The ruble exchange rate against the dollar fell by 35% in two weeks. Because of this, companies need to raise prices to compensate for the collapse. However, this will cause certain difficulties due to the deterioration of solvency in Russia. A former Huawei executive told the Financial Times that it has become risky to work in the country.

At the same time, Chinese companies cannot announce a full-fledged suspension of smartphone sales in Russia. The source of the publication notes that Apple and Samsung can afford it, but for manufacturers from China it is "politically sensitive", hinting at Beijing's support for Russia. Still, it makes sense for companies to stand see how things play out, says a former Huawei executive. At the same time, two British directors of the Huawei division immediately left the company due to the fact that it did not condemn Russia's policy.

Representatives of Svyaznoy and two sources in large domestic retailers confirmed to RBC that Chinese companies have indeed reduced supplies. They explained to the Russian partners that the suppliers had logistical problems, and they did not know what prices for smartphones needed to be set.

At the end of last year, smartphone brands from China occupied about 60% of the Russian market, of which Xiaomi accounted for about 31%, FT notes.
